" Weeds "

I once borrowed a book about "Weeds" from our local Library. I was trying to find out what a certain weed was that was in my yard.

It was a very old book and I remember it's definition of "Weeds" reading something like this,
"Any plant that is unwanted".

At the time this really surprised me. I thought that flowers were flowers, vegetables were vegetables, and "Weeds" were just a plant that made more work for gardening.

My thoughts on weeds have changed a bit since I first started gardening. I really complained a lot about weeding, but thinking back on it now, the complaints were almost always because it was so, so hot outside.

Our spring season this year has been perfect for gardening. Including, weeding. I went outside early this morning. It was sunny and in the upper 60's. Perfect for pulling, digging and trimming, unwanted, undesirable plants.

So as I usually do when I work in the yard, I took my radio outside, put on my favorite station, and got busy!!

It was so gorgeous outside. Wonderfully cool. I also had the pleasure of Mr. Mockingbirds company to serenade me while I worked.

This bird amazes me. He almost always perches atop the utility pole next to my yard. He whistles and sings then hops about a foot straight up in the air.

It took me a good four hours with a couple of breaks in between all of the weeding. All the while, that Mockingbird sang. The entire time!!

Finally I finished the back section of the yard and never once broke a sweat. If only everyday could be as perfect as today was. At least for gardening.

I packed up my tools and gear. Said goodbye to the bird and came inside to start some laundry. It was a good morning and I think all of the work was worth it...

I'm just happy that I was able to complete one section of the yard. It can be hard to keep up with at times, but I think it's worth it !

So my final thoughts about "weeds" are this. If we didn't have any, there wouldn't be much to do in the garden. I wouldn't have anything to do but look at all my pretty flowers. That would be nice but I enjoy playing in my yard even if it is pulling weeds.

Although, my thoughts about "Weeds" may change come July and August! Oh well, for now I'll just enjoy "Playing"!

I think it is satisfying to clear and weed, and sweat, then sit back and enjoy. Your yard looks so tidy. :)

I love this post, Di. I remember that I used to love to weed the garden when I was a child. It was a "job" that showed results...
I'm amazed that you can do that after your double knee operation. Do you use a stool or just sit down and go to it ?

First of all Di, I love the look of your blog. How did you do that? I seem to be design challenged these days.

I also wonder how you do gardening after your knee surgery? How do you do it?

I love your garden too, it looks very nice and colorful.

I have many unwanted plants in my garden; it's never-ending trying to clean them up. But again, it gives me something to do and something to aim for.

Your flowers, on the other hand, are lovely.

Ginnie, I use a Lawn Buddy cart to sit on.

Teresa and Ginnie, My knees work great so I am able to do more than ever before!! And Teresa, my daughter Ginny did my blog background for me when she came for Mother's Day. I don't have a clue how she did it, LOL!!

To all of you, thank you! I love flowers. It is a passion.
Love Di ♥

Diana,

That looks great! Personally, I hate weeding, I have too many other things to do and those blasted weeds keep coming back. :)

Maybe some day I'll appreciate it as well but for now, nope but I can appreciate how nice your gardens look! :)

What a pretty garden. Yes, I agree it is worth it. What a sense of satisfaction when you look at the pretty space you've made.

I remember spending a few minutes in the garden every evening when I got home from the office. I'd pull a few weeds, water what needed watering, then sit down with a glass of wine and enjoy it before going in the house to make something to eat. It was a great transition period between work and home chores in the evening. Those were fun days of having a very nice looking garden.

Hugs,
Lois

Your yard looks great, Di...you have some lovely flowers blooming there! I spent 2 hours early this morning weeding and pulling up little oak trees from where acorns sprouted.

What great pics, Di! I spent a couple of hours this AM in my tiny gardens in Denver. You have such a nice variety of plants. How are the knees feeling after all that bending?

Some plants that considered by many to "weeds" grow in my yard. Here, most of them are considered "wildflowers," and in this arid place, I'll let 'em be; I enjoy whatever color God gives! About the only things I get rid of are Scotch thistles, even though the blooms are amazingly beautiful. They are enormous pests and spread like wildfire. And getting rid of a patch of them is like dealing with as many cacti! Horribly prickly!

It's hot here lately, more like July than May. Lot's of sweat when I do my weeding.

OH my friend, I am just catching up on blogs again. I just started crying when I read your post of Ginny surprising you and your phone call! Ummmm I can imagine how overjoyed you were. This is hard to type with my cast on. I have been feeling very sorry for myself, but it will pass I guess. I think the ribs hurt the worse. What a wonderful mothers day you had. I was alone. Yes, all alone. Hubby working 300 miles away and kids, well they were doing there mothers day thing with there little family. It sucked. But...it could be worse. There could be no phone service, and I did hear from everyone and did get some yummy strawberries from my daughter the Sat before. Hope you are well. Sounds like you are! Hugs....lindalu

Thought provoking post! In Nor California, many of the most stylish gardens are just weeds from the hills and beaches. My mother came from New Zealand and told me that Kiwis aren't allowed to have Santa Barbara daisies because they are considered such a nuisance. I have them all over my garden...How funny

I suppose that domesticated plants started out their time on earth (hundreds or thousands of years ago) as weeds...I always feel sad for weeds...some were chosen and some remain...weeds!

I don't mind pulling the weeds so much, it does give me something to do and I like how tidy my garden looks afterwards.
I like your new blog look!

What a lovely blog spot you have. I've always disliked weeding, especially when my mother sent me out to her huge vegetable garden to weed the strawberry patch. I enjoy a Mocking Bird on our daughter's farm--I don't hear or see them in our part of the city. I love the way they dance in the air when they're singing.
