" Funky Friday "

I used to love Fridays when I was younger. Now it's a bit of a different story for me. I love Fridays when my husband comes home. However that doesn't happen too often.

Fridays are good for most people as they usually mean payday. That is the reason that I don't care for them now. Sounds silly perhaps, but Fridays for me mean running all over town paying bills and shopping.
Some might think "Well shopping is fun!". Not for me. I really don't like to shop. I like to thrift shop. That is fun for me. I found something really exciting this week at my favorite thrift shop.

It is in perfect working order and has never been used. Brand new, still in the box! Perhaps you may remember one of these.
And you'll have to excuse me because I really don't know the name of it, but I think that the grandchildren will get a kick out of it.

My Katie girl had never seen one before. So as I was putting it together, she looked intrigued. She said "What is it?". I told her "Just wait and you will see, it's really cool.".

When I had lit the candles, it started to spin, she didn't look impressed. But I knew she was. Later that evening when her friend, Natasha came to spend the night, my Katie girl asked " Mom, can I light the candles on this thing to show Natasha?".

Of coarse I said yes, how could I not.

I will tell you that these two girls refer to themselves as "Jesus Freaks". So this carosel of sorts intriquded them.

The bottom of the carousel has a nativity, the middle a shepherd and his sheep, and at the top are angels blowing trumpets.

They stared for a while before they blew out the candles. They liked it I know. I know because they were quite.

All of that for five bucks. Thats why I like thrift shopping.

I also went turkey hunting today. When Katie was a little girl I would say to her "It's time to go turkey hunting!". She loved it then. She turned me down this time. I expected as much.

I think I got a good deal. I bought a 23 lb. Jenny O, for $15.00. And a whole bunch of fixin's for Thanksgiving Day. I am looking so forward to that day. To me, it is one of the most wonderful days of the year.

Thanksgiving Day last year was the last time that my husband Jake saw my mother. It was just a couple weeks later that she passed away. This will be our first, well, my first Thanksgiving Day without her. In 52 years. As much as this hurts, I intend on enjoying and giving this day my all.

My daughter Ginny will be here! I am so excited about that. I haven't seen her since last Christmas. She came home for mom's funeral and then came back for Christmas. I miss her so. She is truly a wonderful daughter. One that anyone would be proud to call "Daughter".

As many of you know, this past year I have redone our living room and just recently our dining room. My oldest daughter, Ginny has not yet seen either rooms. Except for pictures. And I promised pictures. So here they are.

So there's some of the photos that I promised. The color on the walls isn't quite that dark but my little camera and I have issues at times!

After I first painted the room and put some of the things up, I was a bit dissappointed. I think it took me time to get used to the change. I have rearranged and added some things since then and now I am happy with it. But I need new curtains. Unfortunatly the old one's just didn't match anymore. This was sad for Ginny and I as we both loved those curtains.
I looked around today for some new ones but just couldn't find anything that I REALLY liked. So I hung some white lace one's for now. They look better. I'll find something just right eventually.

So that's my funky Friday. Katie is gone tonight so I am alone and very tired from the day of errands. I hope that everyone has a good weekend. I still have lots of work to get done before Ginny comes home but the rest of the night belongs to me!
I will put my feet up and perhaps try to find a good movie to watch!
Happy Friday!

You've done such a great job on your remodeling! It is so very cozy and warm looking. Your candle thingie reminds me of a carousel lamp I had as a child. I love getting a bargain, too, and that one is going to be quite a conversation piece this holiday season.

Happy Weekend.

Hugs,
Lois

Good morning Di...your Funky Friday post gave me a Sentimental Saturday! Thanksgiving is my favorite time too, the 24th is/was my mother's birthday, so sometimes it fell on Thanksgiving. One of her gifts to me was an 18inch windmill carousel ~EXACTLY~ like yours. It's one of a few Christmas decorations I bring out for Thanksgiving!

Your dining room looks great...warm and inviting...perfect for your Thanksgiving meal!

Your thrift find reminds me of the Swedish Angel Chimes (Ray's family is Swedish and I first them at his parents house, his Mom had little brass angels that spun around and rang bells when the candles were lit and his grandmother had a wooden one similar to yours).

I love your home! The color is very pretty and I like the way the lace curtains look, very warm, very 'homey', and it gives me a wonderful feeling of nostalgia.
Great job, Di!

Nice you got all the fixin's for Thanksgiving already! I love that preparation! We're going to Ray's sister this year and everyone will be coming to us for Christmas. But I usually do an 'after-Thanksgiving Dinner' the weekend after Thanksgiving for Ray & kids anyway. We put the tree up the day after Thanksgiving, and then usually on Saturday or Sunday we have the kids over for turkey dinner.

So glad you were able to get some enjoyment out of your Friday! And I'm so glad you have lots of joy to look forward to! I love hearing about your girls!

Take care.
Love to you,E

About the only things I like shopping for are cameras and computers -- in otherwords, I only like shopping about once every decade. :)

Your room will be perfect for Thanksgiving...I agree with the other comments that is is warm and friendly and I may add cozy. The carousel is a real find and I bet your grands will love it.I have seen them before only much smaller.I am fortunate to go to my best friend Sue's house every Thanksgiving..she is the best cook ever.Like you I like thrift shops and antique shops and not so much the grocery store. Putting your feet up and watching a movie sounds good...maybe I will do that myself.

Your room is beautiful! I like the blue & white china in your mirror/shelf....

I can only HOPE I find our turkey at that price. Well done. I will be praying for your courage and joy in this thanksgiving season - your first without your mother. Glad Ginny can be home. I'm sure you'll have a good day.

I will begin thinking about thanksgiving meal after our vacation is officially over (we came home a couple of days early to ease back into "normal" life).

So far I know of 16 who will be our guests that day. Maybe more.

I ♥ed your fabulous thrift store find!

Your room looks cozy and appealing, Di - you did a wonderful job (and Jake, too!). We'll be having Thanksgiving with Jim, Michelle, and the kids this year, so no turkey shopping for me. How many will you have at your table?

I love your Christmas carousel, I have one just like it that I have had since the '80's. I don't usually burn the candles--just have it for the looks. I missed if yours has a music box too.
Love,
Marie

Loved reading this Di, I like the gizmo with the candles. Great buy for $5.00. I also shop at Thrift Shops and can find really good clothing for next to nothing. It might not be the fancy Brand Names, but I don't mind.

I had an interesting day, if you visit the blog you will read all about the visit to see the Dump with the Pink Bathtub, Yellow Sink and White Stained Water Closet. Don't even ask about the fridge or stove.

I love those thingy-dingies!! We had one for years, and it was my favorite Christmas decorations. BTW, I love thrift store shopping, too. Thursday, when I went to do my volunteer shift at the thrift shop here, I found a gorgeous lavender corduroy shirt that looks brand new, and for a dollar, I was thrilled silly!! Life is good!

Your rooms look so cozy and warm and perfect for a wonderful Thanksgiving feast! I know that it will seem strange and lonely without your mother and I think your determination to make the best of it with your precious family is wonderful. Thursday, Veteran's Day, was the 4 year anniversary of my own mom's passing. Time does help but for some reason, this year I have been a bit emotional and the grief somehow feels fresh and raw. I find that letting it have its way with me for a few days is okay but after than I have to rein it in and get on with life...because life goes on and my mom would not want me sad.
I love your little candle/nativity thing and that sounds like a great price for one. We used to have one years ago and I don't know what happened to it. I also love the wall art above the bookcase and all of your vintage and antique plates on the wall! I love antiques! I too love thrift shops.
Love, Vicki

My mom had something similar to that but it was made from metal and had angels that danced around when you lit the candles. That's so neat that you found that in that condition. I love your new room. It really does look cozy and a perfect place for this years turkey dinner.

That thriftshop thing is something I've never seen, but it is pretty unique looking.
Thanksgiving is coming fast. Looks like I'll be cooking dinner again this year for about 20 or so people. Got to start looking for sales and coupons and get in shopping mode.
Things look nice and homey at your place.

Ahh, you have been such a busy girl! My Thanksgiving...will be just the 2 of us. First time that has happened in 40 years together. I will have lots of leftovers I guess. But that's ok. I am not up to driving for 5 hours this time even though I miss the "little rascals". It will be a quiet long weekend. Hope yours is full of laughter and fun!
