" Promise Not to Laugh."

Please don't laugh at me. O.K.?
My son brought over these lovely root things for me along with some pears today. They were from his father-in-laws garden. I am pretty sure that they are turnips. But since I've never had a turnip,
I am really not to sure.

So I need your help identifying these roots. And remember that I am a city girl. And my mother never had these in the house when I was growing up. I have lots of excuses for you to not laugh at me.

Here is the root in question. At least I think it's a root, I'm not even sure of that!

I do think that they are pretty. I love the purple on them. So after you have finished giggling at my ignorance perhaps you can also tell me what to do with them.

Alright, lets not get nasty here!
Just perhaps a few preparation ideas would be nice as I would like to try them. Thank you ahead, for whatever info you can help me with.

And it's really alright to laugh at me if you want to. I don't mind.

So I finished painting my dining room today. I am so happy with it. It now matches the front room. That's what happens when you have left over paint!

I will show you what it looks like now. Everything won't be put back together until the weekend. I will post pictures sometime next week of the final result.

And please excuse the dirty chandelier. It will get cleaned when all is said and done!

There you go, in case you didn't remember the colors of the living room. I am so happy to be done with this job and am grateful that my body held up!

I am going to relax for the rest of the evening but before I go I have one more thing I wanted to tell you.

We have digital cable for our television. It also has music channels on it which I often listen to like now while I am typing this.

One of the music stations is called "Sounds of the Seasons".
Right now they are playing "Snowfall" by The Four Freshmen.

It is such a beautiful song. They also just got through playing "Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer".

I just love Christmas and Holiday music, don't you?

I'll leave the identification and recipes for someone else to answer. I just want to say how nice your paint job looks. I give you so much credit for doing that. So nice.

That's a turnip; cook it like a potato and sprinkle with bacon, maybe. I don't buy turnips though, I prefer parsnips. The dining room walls and ceiling look very nice Di.

Can't believe you heard a Christmas song already!

We've always had a garden but never grew those before. Pretty sure it's a turnip but I have no idea what to do with them...

I DO love Christmas music.

I believe that it's a white turnip or rutabaga. A Google page of images>, some of which look like yours.

Turnips sounds like a good bet to me, but I have no idea what you would do with them. You are being very industrious. Looks nice.

Dining room looks lovely. Di those are turnips, I cut mine in chunks boil them, then I mash them and I always add a mashed potato to mine. I love turnip but prefer parsnips as well. Hope you are not too sore......:-) Hugs

Looks like people have identified your "root" for you, and given ways to eat.

Your dining room looks great--glad you got it done.

I do love Holiday music--don't have cable TV--will have to use my CD's. Blessings Donna

Dear Di...Those, my friend are turnips. We live on them here in the South!!......Uhmmmmm.
I smile at the fact that you are listening to holiday music...."snow" music, I'm sure...and I'm sweltering here witht the air conditioner still going.
I posted a photo on my blog today that I think you will recognize....and if I could be there with you right now, I would give you a great biiiiig hug.... I cried when I opened the gift....because my sweet friend lovingly made something for Mama and for me to share....and I wanted you to know that I am speechless (hard to believe that Jackie is speechless, isn't it...)but I am....and I want you to know from the bottom of my heart how much your love and friendship means to me....and to have something so beautiful that you have made with your own hands....well, Di, I just can't tell you how much that means to me....If I could see you now, you would see me blubbering through tears...so, I'll send this to you...with a hug and a kiss...thanking you from the bottom of my heart.
Love,
Jackie

They are a Turnip Di, take it from a Country Lad who grew up in Nova Scotia and saw my mother pick them out of her Garden.

I wouldn't have known what it was either...when in doubt just boil it or mash it and cook it with greens...turnip greens? I am not ready for Christmas music just yet but am sure it will be in the stores soon.♫ ♪ ♫

Di, I would have no idea how to prepare that root thing, but Wanda and Bernie are sure to be right. I'd just make a still-life of them and start photographing. Your room looks great - now can you rest on your laurels?

Thats a turnip for sure. We usually boil them, then mash with butter and a little brown sugar to take away the tartness. They are usually served with turkey dinner as an extra vegetable.

From a Canadian lurker who had to get her two cents worth added.

Hi RM,
All Canadians are welcome here! I love Canada. Thank you for your info on the turnip. I am anxious to see how they taste! Love Di ♥

I believe the only difference between a turnip and a rutabaga is size. They look almost the same but the turnip is usually fairly small...about the size of an onion.

HI Di, I was in the store the other day and they were playing Christmas music. I guess I should expect it, the day after Halloween but I just can't get myself to turn it on here at home yet. Good luck on the turnip.

Hi Di,

Been on a long vacation and hence only now that i have appeared here in your place...I need to catch up with your posts! :-)

Yes, I am not laughing but smiling at the roots you were showing us...actually it's a bulb I guess...best thing to do to find out what it is to plant it in a pot and observe what will happen or what will it grown into, then you can find out!

I like your painting job and am happy to note that your health cooperative with the work! ;-)

Hearing Christmas songs makes me nostalgic...this is the 8th year hubby will not be spending Christmas with us. It is because he's always in the ship in december...Sad, isn't it?

Pretty, pretty, pretty! Congratulations on a HUGE project well-done. Is the ceiling the same color or a shade darker? I'm so happy to get to see this and know you must be feeling quite self-satisfied :)

Hi Di, definitely a turnip or a rutabaga, which are pretty much the same thing, I think. My mother loved both but I have no clue what to do with them other than cut them up and cook like potatoes. That's what she did. I never liked them, but am thinking I might try them again one days, since your taste is supposed to change every sever year (probably and old wives tale, but I'm an old wife so maybe it applies to me!) LOL
Your room is so beautiful. I love the color and am sure that your Thanksgiving feast will be stunning against that background!
I read your last post about the depression, etc. I will just say that some anti-depressants also work as anti-anxiety medication as well as depression. I am just glad that you are feeling good and that your anxiety is being held in check with all that work! You make me tired reading about all you do!
Isn't it wonderful when a big project is finished and you can stand back and admire your handiwork! Love,Vicki

turnips. You can add them to soups and stews and they are good just peeled, cut up and boiled then some butter on them. You can carmelize them too.....Turnips simmer to tenderness, then are coated with butter and a little sugar and cooked to sweet perfection.
